What is required for the first appointment?

Before arranging the first appointment, it is necessary to take an examination at your primary care dentist, to rehabilitate decayed and inadequately fixed teeth and take an X-ray of all the teeth – orthopantomograph.

Does it hurt to put braces?

No, it does not. The braces are glued bracket by bracket on teeth after which the wire is added. It is very thin and soft at the beginning of the procedure. When the braces start to move the teeth, it is possible to feel discomfort, which varies from patient to patient, and it usually disappears after a few days. In case of stronger discomfort, it is recommended to take a pain reliever.

How to maintain oral hygiene with fixed braces?

It is very important that the oral hygiene is thorough and regular. You will get the detailed instructions and a dental hygiene kit after putting the braces. It is important to wash your teeth regularly and to use mouthwashes and dental floss. In case of inadequate oral hygiene, we might be forced to stop the treatment earlier because of the risk for the patient’s dental health. Each patient is responsible for their own dental health!

What can I eat?

The braces are glued firmly to your teeth. Nevertheless, caution is essential. It is important that you do not bite off food (sandwiches, apples, peaches, etc.) but to tear off bit by bit or cut it in smaller pieces. When you bite off food it produces strong pressure on the braces and they can fell off. The patient should avoid hard bites (hard candies, nuts, etc.) as well as the chewing gums. While chewing gums teeth can move in the wrong direction.

What if the bracket falls off?

Call the dental office and make an appointment.

Why do we use silicon to protect the mucous membrane of the cheek?

Silicon is used to reduce the possibility of sores on the mucous membrane of the cheeks or to enable easier healing of the existing sores. Braces are not sharp but they are something new between the teeth and the mucous membrane, and it may cause discomfort at the beginning, but not for long. When you need to use silicon, you cut a piece the size of a pea and cover the bracket. That creates a protective barrier. Silicon is intended for single use. Occasionally, it can happen that the wire will sting you. In that case, cover the last bracket with silicon and make an appointment.

Can I fix my teeth while having braces?

Absolutely. In the case that the wire makes problems to the dentist, just call us and make an appointment. We will remove the wire the very day you are scheduled to fix your tooth and put it back afterwards. The procedure is the same in case of removing the tartar or sandblasting.

What if I miss the appointment?

In that case, call us to arrange another appointment. In order to get a successful treatment, it is required to go regularly for a checkup. If not, the therapy will not develop as planned. That is why it is quite necessary to inform us if you cannot come.

What is a retention phase of the therapy?

After the active phase of the orthodontic therapy comes the phase of retaining. After removing the braces, we put a fixed retainer – the wires on the upper and lower teeth which assure that the teeth will stay in a position where they were exactly after the treatment was over. Besides that, the patient also has a removable transparent ESSIX retainer. The patient gets detailed instructions about wearing and maintaining the retainer. During the retention period, after the braces are removed, the regular checkups are still needed. It is expected to clean the fixed retainer from tartar at your dentist once or twice a year. In case that the removable retainer brakes, please call us and we will make another one for you.
